She gained wide popularity for her role in the film "Tlayucan" in 1962, in which she played the character of a poor indigenous woman who becomes the owner of a small store.
India Maria became known for her comedic performances, often making fun of socio-economic issues, prejudices, and Mexican politics. She acted in over 20 films and starred in her own television show, "El show de India Maria", in the 1980s.
